Mobile number portability will engender competition among operators – NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, said it introduced the Mobile Number Portability, simply referred to as "porting", into the telecoms industry in order to create healthy competition among the operators. 

Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwah, disclosed this at the 73rd edition of the Telecoms Consumer Parliament held at the Bridge Waters Hotels, Enugu.
Juwah said consumers of telecoms services were desirous of getting value for their money, adding that it was the duty of the commission to protect consumers from abuses by the service providers.
He continued that the NCC had in line with this, introduced porting as one of such measured which would to a large extent enhance quality network and force operators to lower their tariff.
According to him, "Mobile Number Portability will provide consumers with the option of choosing their network at any time while retaining their number.
"It will give rise to healthy competition in the industry, enhance quality of service and improve customer service delivery to the consumers.
"It will provide consumers with unfettered choice and remove the trouble of having to move around with multiple cell phones".
"Mobile Number Portability will eliminate the associated cost of updating business contacts, marketing, notifying family members and associates", he added.
The NCC boss expressed optimism that porting would considerably bring down tariff charges in view of the competition it would engender among operators, stressing that "it will further expand the market place and make the deployment of new and enhanced telecom services faster and more cost effective".
On the procedure for porting, he explained that "porting subscribers must register their SIM cards before they can port. Without the registration, the network operators would not be able to identify a porting subscriber or confirm that such is the rightful owner of the number being ported".
Juwa equally disclosed that a subscriber must be physically present before the operator would allow the porting process, which would take a maximum of 48 hours.
Most of the parliamentarians who spoke at the forum, urged the NCC to address the issue of inter-connectivity rate, to make porting meaningful.
The Mobile Number Portability, which took off on the 22nd day of April, 2013, allows a telecoms subscriber to migrate from one network to another within a period of 90 days without losing the original mobile number

I’ve no regrets about killing my father –Suspect

An 18-year-old boy, Olanrewaju Kayode-Aremu, who was recently arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for stabbing his 46-year-old father, Victor Kayode-Aremu, to death has said he does not regret his action.

The native of Kwara State added that he decided to stab his father to death because he could not lay his hands on poison or a gun which he would have used to kill his father

PUNCH Metro had reported on May 15, 2013 that the suspect stabbed his father to death at their home located at Langbasa in Ajah.

It had also been reported that the suspect was a Geology student of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, but was asked to leave the school due to his poor grades.

The suspect, who is currently being detained at the state Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, said he killed his father for many reasons.

He said killing his father was a mistake but he still had no regrets.

Olarenwaju said one of the reasons why he killed his father was that his father forced him to study Geology even though he did not like the course.

Why Ombatse cult killed policemen, DSS operatives

Plausible reasons why the Ombatse cult killed no fewer than 100 policemen and security operatives in Eggon community of NasarawaState have begun to emerge.
Findings by Vanguard revealed that the fear by the Eggon-speaking natives of the state that Governor Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura, is planning to renege on his pledge to serve for only a term of four years, triggered the lethal onslaught.
Competent government sources confirmed to Vanguard, yesterday, that Governor Al-Makura was interested in a second term although he had served notice in 2011 to do just four years and hand over to an Eggon politician, since the area has never tasted the governorship seat in the 16 years of the state’s existence.
According to findings, Eggon, which are mostly Christians and constitute the dominant ethnic race in the state, are found in all the LGAs of Nasarawa State but they feel politically marginalised by successive administrations.
